Every year, the Scarborough Mirror hosts the Reader’s Choice Awards. The community has the opportunity to nominate their favourite businesses and professionals and then vote the Top 10 listings of each category.
Helping Hands Doula was nominated for the Best Health Service category, and then chosen for the most prestigious Diamond Award. Our entire team is thrilled to receive this recognition. We have our clients and community to thank for this.
Happy Birthday Helping Hands
This news couldn’t be more timely, as we simultaneously celebrated a very special milestone. Helping Hands rang in 20 years in business this January. Our founder, Kristi Clements reminisces, “The more I did {birth work}, the more I loved it. I can’t believe I have been to so many birthday parties!” It’s still quite emotional that our team has touched so many lives in such a positive way.
How we are celebrating?
With the current climate, having all of our past & current clients under one roof wasn’t possible. So we took to our social channels to host an online party. We had a blast recounting these last 20 years providing care to growing families. See what our supporters contributed to the online party below:
Client Well Wishes Part 1
Client Well Wishes Part 2
We couldn’t think of a better gift than the recognition from our clients & community of being the Best Doulas in Toronto! Yahoo!! Some of our clients & partners in care shared videos of themselves cheering on our team virtually.
Team Well Wishes
Of course we needed to celebrate with our team! Seeing the many lives that have been touched over the last 2 decades has been incredibly emotional for all of us. The career of doula work has catapulted to a professional capacity, allowing those that are called to this work to have a living wage while also balancing their own family life. We couldn’t be more proud of the women that have been a major part of this journey!
How Doulas Have Grown Up
Doulas were not as easily recognized by the general public in the beginning of business. Very rarely someone might think that a doula was synonymous with a midwife, but for the majority had never heard the word previously. Founder Kristi Clements, explains what that shift has been like over the last 2 decades in being a helping hand to growing parents.
“When I started 20 years ago, nobody knew what a doula was. Most people really had no clue, so I would say well I am a massage therapist, could you imagine having a massage therapist at your birth? All of a sudden they could envision what that might be like. People now are actively searching for doulas & realize that they can have a doula with any birth or parenting experience they want. They can have an epidural, they can have a c-section, or they can have a home water birth. They could choose to breastfeed or choose to formula feed, it doesn’t matter. The support is so important. The information we provide helps the whole process.”
How to see if a Doula is Right for You
The most exciting thing of all is that parents-to-be are advocating for themselves to thrive and not just survive new parenting. Seeking out professional support to have the best possible experience is exactly what families are now doing. Curious how a doula can fit in to your own personal care plan?
