Romance can sometimes take a back seat for new parents, and Valentine’s Day may seem a little impossible to fit in with your new baby.
The red roses, couple’s massage & fancy night out of Valentine’s Past is lovely, but what is really important when celebrating? For most of us, it is feeling loved and reciprocating that feeling towards our partner. In doing so our bodies release oxytocin, the “love” hormone, which helps in bonding and feeling good overall.
Taking time to do something together can actually have a physical change on your body. So here are some ideas for new families to do to get your love hormone flowing.
1. Indoor Picnic
You don’t need to go to a fancy restaurant to enjoy time together. Order in your favourite meal and recreate that date night feeling. Lay a blanket in the middle of a room, light a few candles and spend the time reconnecting. Does baby need a little more attention? No problem, pause and reheat your meal when you are feeling ready.
2. Movie Marathon
Turn on Netflix and watch a classic or a new film together right in the comfort of your home. Cuddling up on the couch can help you feel closer as a couple. Cuddle up with baby or have baby close by in their pack-and-play or swing. Whatever your prefer.
3. Game Night
Take out an old board game, deck of cards, or a puzzle. Be a little silly and have fun! While you play, share with your partner your most memorable moments with your life with baby.
4. Get Creative
Play around with your artistic side & paint a Valentine Baby Card! Head to your local art supply store and pick up some paper and non toxic paint. Paint baby’s feet or hands and stamp onto the paper. Voila, you have instant cards for family and friends, and likely an entertaining experience for both of you.
5. Take a hike!
Get outside even if it’s for 10 minutes. Make sure that you dress accordingly to weather conditions and take it slow. If you want to bring baby, a baby carrier kept close to you is a great option. Depending on where you are walking, a stroller might be best. Babies need one extra layer of clothing than what you would be comfortable in.
